I really have always enjoyed the books by Mary Kingswood. In fact I have all her books in print which means she is a very favorite author!Two things disturbed me in this book and made me disappointed in it. I felt like Louisa, and Laurence to a lesser extent, were always drinking and drinking to excess. It made me feel like she was an alcoholic as she seemed to think about liquor more than anything else. And she was always drinking A LOT!I was also disappointed that after all the discussion of not to have an affair they went ahead and slept together before marriage. No, this was not steamy at all, but it happened all the same. I am old fashioned and prefer my H and h to wait until the vows are said. This has happened in at least one other of her books, but it still disappoints.The storyline was great and the rest of the book was good. I just wish that I had not always felt like Louisa was an alcoholic. I kept wishing she would get help for her problem!I hope the next book in the series is better! I've already pre-ordered it. Thirty year old widow Louisa Middlehope is finally free! Little did she know that life in the small village of Upper Maeswood would come with it's own expectations about what a young widow should and shouldn't be. Mary Kingswood has a great talent for imbuing even her minor characters with depth and complexity, - people that we become attached to and whose lives we are emotionally invested in. The inhabitants of this little village are all relatable and believable - people we know.The author has written a very engaging story - a little romance, a little mystery and a whole lot of charm and wit. I cannot wait for the second book in the series to revisit old friends and find out what has been happening in the village since last I was with them.I received a complimentary ARC of this book which I voluntarily reviewed. I have to admit I am a huge fan of this author's writing. She consistently writes very enjoyable tales. I enjoyed her last series so much that I pre-ordered this book back in October. I was very excited to get to be able to read this before it was available to the public. It did not disappoint!
